The drug Virolex is a drug that exhibits a high therapeutic activity against viral diseases, as well as eliminates the effects of allergies.
Drug release form
Virolex drug is available in the form of 3% eye ointment. The ointment is a homogeneous translucent mass without any specific smell. The drug is available in aluminum tubes of 4.5 g in carton.
The main active ingredient of the eye ointment is acyclovir, white petrolatum acts as an auxiliary component.
Pharmacological properties of the drug
The drug Viroleks in the form of 3% ophthalmic ointment is a powerful antiviral agent of local action. Acyclovir, which is part of the ointment, is highly effective against herpes viruses type 1 and 2, Epstein-Barr virus, Zoster viruses and cytomegalovirus. The active substance acts selectively: when applying the drug to the mucous membrane of the eyelid, acyclovir selects only the cells affected by the virus, blocking the pathogen's DNA, which prevents viruses from replicating further.
Indications for use of the drug
Virolex ophthalmic ointment is prescribed to patients for the treatment and prevention of the following conditions:
- Eye diseases caused by the herpes simplex virus 1 and 2 types;
- Viral keratitis;
- Viral conjunctivitis.
This drug is not prescribed to patients with individual intolerance to acyclovir.
Dosage and administration
Virolex ointment should be used only as prescribed by a doctor for the treatment of diseases of the mucous membranes of the eyes caused by herpes simplex viruses or cytomegalovirus. Before using the drug, the patient should wash his hands thoroughly with soap and water.
The ointment is placed in the lower eyelid with a thin strip, slightly pulling the edge of the eyelid down with the other hand. It is recommended to put ointment 3 to 5 times per day, keeping the same time intervals, depending on the severity of the pathological process. After applying the drug, the patient should close the eye and gently massage the eyelid in a clockwise direction for better distribution of the ointment. The course of treatment largely depends on the severity of the viral infection, the presence of complications, the individual tolerance of the drug by the patient. According to the instructions to the drug, the duration of treatment with Orolex eye ointment is no more than 5-7 days. In the absence of a therapeutic effect, the patient should consult the doctor again in order to clarify the correctness of the diagnosis and the treatment prescribed.
The course of treatment with ophthalmic ointment continues for 3 days after the visible improvement of the condition of the eyes.
Use of the drug during pregnancy and breastfeeding
The use of Virolex eye ointment during the period when a woman is carrying a child is not recommended due to the lack of reliable data on the safety of the effect of acyclovir on the fetus. If necessary, drug therapy to use the ointment is possible only after a careful assessment of the ratio of benefits for the mother and the risk to the fetus. Treatment in this case is carried out under strict medical supervision.
The use of Virolex eye ointment during breastfeeding is possible only in the most extreme cases under the strict supervision of the attending physician.
With proper use of eye ointment, side effects develop rarely in patients. In some cases, the development of such reactions is possible:
- Foreign body sensation in the eye;
- Burning and itching in the eye;
- Rash around the eyes;
- Dryness of the mucous membrane of the eyes.
As a rule, all these manifestations are not dangerous and do not require discontinuation of the drug.
Cases of overdose with eye oxyzerolex are not described in medicine, however, in order to prevent the development of side effects and discomfort, we should not exceed the dose indicated in the instructions.
The interaction of the drug with other medicinal substances
The simultaneous use of Virolex eye ointment with oral acyclovir preparations enhances the therapeutic effect of the first.
You can not simultaneously use several varieties of eye ointments in the treatment of diseases of the eyelids and conjunctiva due to the high risk of side effects, dryness of the mucous membrane of the eyes and an allergic reaction.
The therapeutic effect of Virolex ophthalmic ointment will be much higher if the treatment is started at the very early stage of the development of a viral infection, even before the onset of marked clinical symptoms, for example, mild burning and itching in the eyes.
Patients wearing contact lenses are advised to consult an ophthalmologist before using eye ointment.
