Drug for internal use, possessing secretomotor (stimulating expectoration) and secretolytic action. Thins, increases the volume and facilitates the excretion of secreted sputum. Remains active in the presence of mucopurulent mucolytic secretion.
The mechanism of action of effervescent tablets Vicks Active is based on the ability of the sulfide groups of the active component to break the disulfide bonds of acid mucopolysaccharides sputum. As a result, depolarization of mucoproteins occurs and the viscosity of mucus decreases.
Under the influence of acetylcysteine, the synthesis of glutathione increases (an important antioxidant factor of intracellular protection, which maintains the functional activity and morphological integrity of the cell). However, this substance has an antioxidant effect, suppresses the formation of free radicals and active oxygen-containing substances that contribute to the development of inflammation in the lung tissue.
Effervescent tablets Vicks Active are well absorbed from the digestive tract. Due to the initial passage through the liver, the absolute bioavailability of the drug is reduced by 10%. The maximum concentration in the blood plasma reaches after 1-3 hours. Acetylcysteine is able to penetrate the placenta and accumulate in the amniotic fluid.
In the process of metabolism breaks down to cysteine, cyaceticysteine, cystine and disulfides. It is excreted in the form of inactive metabolites by the kidneys. An insignificant part is allocated together with feces.
In patients with impaired liver function, the maximum concentration of the active ingredient in the blood plasma is observed after 8 hours.
Indications for use
- Acute and chronic bronchitis ;
- Pathological conditions, accompanied by the formation of difficult-to-separate viscous mucopurulent sputum;
- Bronchial asthma;
- Tracheitis developed on the background of a viral or bacterial infection;
- Bronchial occlusion with mucus plug;
- Cystic fibrosis (as a combination therapy drug);
- Post-traumatic and postoperative conditions;
- Purulent and catarrhal otitis media;
- Various forms of sinusitis (to facilitate the discharge of mucous secretions);
- Paracetamol overdose.
- Pregnancy and lactation (in the absence of data on the use);
- Children's age up to 2 years (for tablets of 200 mg);
- Age up to 14 years (for tablets of 600 mg);
- Exacerbation of gastric ulcer and 12 p intestine;
- Individual intolerance to the components of the drug.
Effervescent tablets Vicks Active are used with extreme caution in bronchial asthma, renal and hepatic pathologies, varicose veins, dysfunction of the adrenal glands, in case of arterial hypertension, the tendency to bleeding and hemoptysis.
Dosage and administration
Tablets are taken after meals, after pre-dissolving in water.
The drug dosage of 600 mg is recommended for adults and children over 14 years. Appointed whole or ½ pill, 2-3 times a day. The maximum daily dose should not exceed 600 mg.
A tablet preparation with a dosage of 200 mg for adults and children after 14 is prescribed 1 tablet 2-3 times a day. Daily dose of 400-600 mg.
Children from 6 to 14 years old - 1 tablet (200 mg), 2 times a day. Daily dose of 400 mg.
Children from 2 to 6 years old - ½ tablet 2-3 times a day (no more than 200-300 mg per day).
In the treatment of cystic fibrosis, children from 2 to 6 years old are prescribed 100 mg of the drug (1/2 tablet) 4 times a day.
Children over 6 years old - 1 tablet (200 mg) 3 times a day.
In chronic cystic fibrosis, long-term use of this drug may be required.
As a rule, Vicks Active effektivomed well tolerated by patients. At the same time, in rare cases, the following side effects may develop:
Since the cardiovascular system : tachycardia , arterial hypotension.
On the part of the respiratory system : bronchospasm.
On the part of the gastrointestinal tract : nausea, feeling of fullness in the stomach, vomiting, heartburn, impaired stool.
Other disorders: stomatitis, runny nose, tinnitus, nosebleeds, fever, drowsiness.
The drug is prohibited to use in combination with antitussive drugs that suppress the cough reflex (due to the high risk of sputum in the respiratory tract, leading to the development of serious complications). When prescribing such a combination, it is necessary to constantly monitor the patient’s condition and ensure adequate drainage of sputum.
The active component is capable of inactivating tetracycline antibiotics, ampicillin, aminoglycosides, cephalosporins, and semi-synthetic penicillin antibiotics. Therefore, in the appointment of a combination therapy with the above drugs between the reception should be observed 2-hour interval.
Acetylcysteine is able to potentiate the vasodilating effect of nitroglycerin. When interacting with this drug, there is a decrease in platelet aggregation. Reduces the severity of hepatoxic effects of paracetamol.

Tablets should not come into contact with easily oxidizing substances, oxygen, rubber and metal.
