Pharmacological properties of the drug
After taking the pill inside active active substances are rapidly absorbed into the common bloodstream. Under the influence of chemical processes, valaciclovir is converted into acyclovir. Acyclovir is marked by the selectivity of the effect, that is, the drug only penetrates into the cells and tissues infected by the virus, without affecting healthy areas.
The active substances of the tablet have a high therapeutic activity against herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2, cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus, chicken pox.
Valtrex tablets are prescribed to patients for treatment and prevention of the following conditions:
- Herpetic eruptions on the mucous membrane of the mouth, under the nose, above the upper lip;

The drug is not prescribed for the treatment of patients with HIV infection.
Method of administration and dosage
Tablets are intended for oral administration. It is recommended to immediately swallow the pill without chewing, squeezed with enough liquid. Depending on the diagnosis, the daily dosage of the drug is different.
According to the instructions, adult patients are prescribed 2 Valtrex tablets 3 times a day for 7 days to treat shingles.
For the treatment of infections caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2, the recommended dose is 500 mg twice a day. The course of treatment is at least 5 days. If there is no therapeutic effect, the patient should consult a doctor to determine the diagnosis or prescription of another medication.
When a patient contacts a patient with herpes, it is recommended to take a course of treatment as a prophylaxis. In this case, the tablets are taken 1-2 times a day for 500 mg for 3-5 days. In case of chronic herpetic infection, to prevent relapse, the patient should begin the course of therapy as early as possible, even before the appearance of the first clinical symptoms, or immediately after the burning sensation and itching appear in the alleged site of the rash.
In genital herpes, the patient is prescribed 500 mg of the drug twice a day. It is recommended to take a course of therapy at once to both sexual partners, otherwise the infection will be transmitted to each other. During the course of therapy, sexual intercourse should be avoided.
In order to prevent the development of cytomegalovirus infection with blood transfusion or internal organ transplant, the patient is prescribed 2 g of the drug per day, dividing them into 4 divided doses of 1 tablet with a dosage of 500 mg. The duration of the course of therapy in this case the doctor determines individually for each patient.
Application of the drug during pregnancy and breastfeeding
In medicine, there is insufficient data on the safety of the main active ingredient on fetal development in the womb, therefore during pregnancy Valtrex tablets can be prescribed to women only if the expected benefit to the mother is higher than possible complications for the embryo. The doctor strictly controls the state of the pregnant woman and, in the event of the development of negative effects, the therapy is immediately canceled.
Scientists conducted numerous studies on animals, and no birth defects were found in the fetus or developmental abnormalities.
When taking the drug inside, the active ingredients easily penetrate into breast milk and can enter the child's body. If it is necessary to treat the drug, nursing mothers should closely monitor the reaction of the child. Valtrex is administered to nursing mothers in a minimally effective dosage.
In most cases, this drug is normally tolerated by patients, but with increased individual sensitivity to the pill components, the patient may develop the following side effects:
- Nausea, pain in the abdomen;
- Change in the clinical picture of blood - thrombocytopenia, leukopenia;
- In rare cases, the development of angioedema or anaphylactic shock;
