Valparin XP instructions for use

Valparin XP refers to drugs of the antiepileptic group. It is prescribed for diseases accompanied by convulsive syndrome.

Release form and composition

Valparin XP is a long-acting drug. The drug is produced in the form of tablets. One dosage form is presented in the form of white, round and biconvex tablets, containing 200 mg of valproate and 87 mg of valproic acid in sodium. Another dosage form is presented in the form of white, oblong tablets with a notch on both sides, having in the composition of sodium valproate 333 mg and valproic acid 145 mg.

pharmachologic effect

The drug belongs to the category of antiepileptic drugs. The mechanism of action is based on the fact that valproic acid stimulates the production and helps the accumulation of gamma-aminobutyric acid in the central nervous system, including in postsynaptic neurons.

As a result, the spread of excitation of the central nervous system is inhibited, epileptic activity is suppressed, a moderate sedative effect is manifested.

The drug reduces the transport of calcium ions to neurons, which leads to a weakening of the electrical impulse and general inhibition.

Compared with other representatives of this category of drugs, Valparin XP does not show a strong hypnotic and sedative effect. The drug does not inhibit the activity of the excretory system, does not lower the heart rate, does not suppress the function of the respiratory center.

The drug reduces the severity of convulsive seizures, reduces the likelihood of epilepsy attacks, inhibits the progression of the disease.

Pharmacokinetics

Therapeutic concentration of the main active substance is reached in 2-8 hours after taking the drug. Drug metabolism occurs in the liver. Excreted in the urine.
