pharmachologic effect

The drug belongs to the category of antiepileptic drugs. The mechanism of action is based on the fact that valproic acid stimulates production and helps accumulation of gamma-aminobutyric acid in the central nervous system, including in postsynaptic neurons.

As a result, the spread of excitation of the central nervous system is inhibited, epileptic activity is suppressed, and a mild calming effect is manifested.

The drug reduces the transport of calcium ions to neurons, which leads to a weakening of the electrical impulse and a general inhibition.

In comparison with other representatives of this category of drugs, Valparin XP does not show a strong hypnotic and sedative effect. The medicine does not inhibit the activity of the excretory system, does not lower the heart rate, does not suppress the function of the respiratory center.

Taking the drug reduces the severity of seizures, reduces the likelihood of epileptic seizures, slows the progression of the disease.

Pharmacokinetics

The therapeutic concentration of the main active substance is achieved 2-8 hours after taking the drug. Metabolism of the drug occurs in the liver. It is excreted from the body with urine.

On the part of the reproductive system: secondary amenorrhea , violation of the menstrual cycle.

Allergic reactions: itching, skin rash, erythema multiforme, photosensitivity, Stevens-Johnson syndrome.

Other: creatinemia, hyperammonemia, weight gain, hair loss.

special instructions

It is necessary to regularly monitor the activity of transaminases, check the level of bilirubin, amylase and blood platelets.

Valproic acid suppresses platelet aggregation, this increases the risk of increased blood clotting during bleeding. It is necessary to take into account the complications associated with bleeding during the postoperative period in patients taking this medication.

In the case of prolonged use of Valparin XP, spontaneous bleeding and bruising may occur. It is necessary to immediately cancel the medication.

Often in the first 6 months of treatment, the drug can cause a violation of liver function and drug pancreatitis. Therefore, the first 23 months of therapy it is desirable to monitor the level of prothrombin, carry out liver tests and control the state of the pancreas.

The drug should be immediately canceled if the following symptoms occur: vomiting, icterus of the skin, severe weakness, swelling, lethargic state.

When taking the drug, you need to be careful when working with dangerous mechanisms and driving vehicles, because the drug reduces the ability to concentrate.

The simultaneous administration of warfarin leads to its reduced binding to plasma proteins.

Sodium valproate affects the concentration of lamotrigine and phenytoin in the blood plasma.

Parallel reception of derivatives of acetylsalicylic acid and anticoagulants increases the antiaggregant effect.
