Valacyclovir is a drug for oral administration of antiviral effects. The drug is especially effective against herpes viruses type 1 and 2, cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus and others, with the exception of HIV.
Release form and composition of the drug
The drug valacyclovir is available in tablet form for oral ingestion of white, coated with a protective film coating. Tablets are packed in a cardboard box in a blister of 10 pieces. Each tablet contains 500 mg of the active active ingredient valacyclovir, as well as auxiliary components.
Pharmacological properties of the drug
Tablets are intended for oral administration. After taking the drug inside the active substance under the influence of certain chemical processes is completely converted into acyclovir. Acyclovir easily penetrates the affected cells and tissues and detrimental effects on them. The activity of the active ingredient can be called highly selective, since the drug penetrates only into the affected structures without affecting healthy tissues and cells. Acyclovir has a high therapeutic effect on herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2, cytomegalovirus , Epsten-Barr virus.
Indications for use
This drug is prescribed to patients for the treatment or prevention of such conditions:
- Herpes lesions on the skin and mucous membranes of the lips;
- Genital herpes;
This drug is not used in patients with individual intolerance to the main active ingredient or auxiliary components of the tablet. The drug is also not prescribed for the treatment of children whose age is less than 12 years.
Dosage and administration
Depending on the diagnosis, the age of the patient and the individual characteristics of the body, the daily dosage of the drug is determined by the doctor.
According to the instructions for the drug, Valaciclovir tablets are prescribed to patients for the treatment of shingles based on 1-2 tablets 3 times a day. Duration of therapy is at least 1 week.
For the treatment of herpes infection of the skin or genital herpes, the drug is prescribed 1 tablet 2 times a day. In order to prevent the development of recurrent herpes or by direct contact with the patient, take 1 tablet of Valaciclovir 1 time per day for 1 week. If necessary, prophylactic treatment is continued for up to 10 days.
In patients with severely impaired liver and kidney function, the daily dose of the drug is somewhat adjusted. Such patients are constantly monitored by the clinical picture of the blood and the general condition during drug therapy.
In most cases, the drug Valocyclovir is well tolerated by patients, but with individual hypersensitivity, the following side effects may develop:
- From the side of the digestive canal - pain in the stomach, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea;
- On the part of the nervous system - dizziness and headaches, fatigue and weakness, possible sleep disorders and psycho-emotional irritability;
- On the part of the clinical picture of blood - a decrease in the number of platelets, hemolytic anemia, an increase in hepatic transaminases;
- The development of renal failure.
With an overdose of the drug in patients there is a deposition of the active substance in the tubules of the kidneys, as a result of which they begin to work incompletely. Treatment of overdose consists of hemodialysis - subject to the development of anuria and renal failure.
Use of the drug during pregnancy and lactation
Valaciclovir tablets are not prescribed for the treatment of pregnant women in the first trimester, due to the lack of reliable data on the safety of the drug for the fetus. In addition, in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, gynecologists do not recommend women to take any medications, since during this period all organs and systems are laid down, and the effects of medications can severely disrupt this delicate process.
The use of Valaciclovir tablets in 2 and 3 trimesters of pregnancy is possible when the expected benefit to the mother is higher than the possible risk to the fetus. Drug therapy is carried out strictly under the supervision of a physician in the minimum effective dosage.
The active ingredient of the drug easily penetrates into breast milk, and then into the body of a child with food. Although there are no facts about the toxicity of acyclovir on the body of the infant, it is still not recommended to prescribe this drug during lactation. If necessary, the use of tablets during breastfeeding a woman should decide on the transfer of the child to an adapted milk formula.
If necessary, the use of this drug in the elderly should ensure that the amount of fluid consumed per day was slightly higher than usual. This is necessary in order to prevent the deposition of components of the drug in the tubules of the kidneys.
When treating genital herpes with this drug to patients during this period, sexual intercourse should be excluded in order to prevent transmission to the partner. It is also advisable for the sexual partner to undergo a course of treatment with the drug, otherwise in the future the infection will be transmitted to each other.

Valaciclovir tablets are available in pharmacies without a doctor's prescription. Store the drug should be in a safe, out of reach of children, at a temperature not exceeding 25 degrees.
