Dystonia in adults: symptoms, treatment

Dystonia is a set of pathological reactions of the body, which develops as a result of certain deviations in the activity of the autonomic nervous system. The manifestations of the IRR are so varied that to date there has not been developed a unified system for the classification of seizures. The most obvious criterion that experts can distinguish is the predominance of activity of either the vagus nerve - vagotonia - or the sympathetic nervous system - sympathicotonia.

The blurring of symptoms, the prevalence of subjective complaints and the diversity of clinical manifestations cast doubt on the existence of vegetovascular dystonia as a separate nosological unit. Most medical schools in the West hold the opinion that the overwhelming number of cases of the IRR are classified as panic attacks, the rest are absolutely specific diseases that the attending physician could not adequately diagnose.

How to classify vascular dystonia?

Vegetative dystonia in adults In addition to the main criterion (vagotonia or sympathicotonia), doctors also take into account during diagnosis:

  • Etiology of seizures.
  • The form of distribution - does the attack affect only one organ system - for example, subjective air deficiency - or is generalized, that is, it spreads to the entire body (air shortage, tachycardia , nausea, dizziness and feeling of fear).
  • Which organ system is most involved in the development of an attack, for example, what is more troubling to the patient - lack of air or heart pain?
  • General condition of the nervous system.
  • The frequency of seizures and their severity.

What is the cause of the development of vegetative dystonia?

Doctors consider congenital propensity to be the most likely cause of VSD. This can be due to both hereditary factors and damage to the nervous system during its intrauterine formation. One way or another, it is most rational to speak not about the cause of dystonia as such, but about the factors that trigger the mechanism of its development. The fact is that each specific factor or coincidence of circumstances are not the causes of the onset of an IRR attack in 100% of patients. Moreover, each patient with a diagnosis of vascular dystonia has its own set of triggers to start a cascade of adverse symptoms.

  1. CNS injuries that can be recorded both during fetal development and throughout life. Usually we are talking about minor deviations, which up to a certain point do not cause anxiety of neuropathologists and psychiatrists. Pathological changes that occur as a result of such injuries lead to an increased psycho-emotional reaction of the patient to any stimulus and to the development of persistent psychotic disorders.
  2. Unfavorable social climate. Most often this factor is of great importance for young children and adolescents. Increased emotional stress, chronic stress and overload are characteristic of children of alcoholic parents, for those who live in single-parent families or face an aggressive attitude towards themselves at home or at school.
  3. IRR can be a reaction to any dramatic changes in the body. These include the development of allergic reactions, transitional age and the development of serious diseases. Patients suffering from dystonia are also extremely sensitive to meteorological factors.
  4. In childhood, the growth rate of the organism is of great importance. Inconsistencies in the development of various calvings of the nervous system can lead to the development of symptoms of vegetovascular dystonia. Usually this phenomenon is temporary and goes away as it grows up, however, in adolescence it proceeds extremely hard and causes a lot of trouble for both the child and his parents.

From all of the above, it is obvious that the majority of cases of vegetative dystonia are registered in children and adolescents. According to some data, up to 80% of the minor suffer from this syndrome starting at about the age of 7-8 years.

Symptoms of vascular dystonia

The complex of symptoms strongly depends on whether the predominant influence of the sympathetic or parasympathetic system.

Symptoms of vagotonia (parasympathetic nervous system tone)

For this type of dystonia, the following symptoms are characteristic:

  • Apathy, drowsiness, a tendency to hypochondriacal states, depression and increased fatigue.
  • Overweight, which persists despite the lack of appetite. Persistent nausea. Constipation and abdominal pain.
  • Constant feeling of chilliness and lack of air. Feeling "lump in the throat" and the inability to inhale. Often accompanied by dizziness.
  • The skin is usually pale with blueness.
  • Frequent urge to urinate, which do not eliminate the development of edema, especially under the eyes.
  • Often develop allergic reactions, increased salivation and sweating.

Most of the symptoms described may be subjective and not confirmed during diagnostic tests.

Symptoms of sympathicotonia

Vegetovascular dystonia, developing in sympathicotonic type, manifests itself almost polar symptoms:

  • Hot temper, sometimes aggressiveness, inability to keep attention on one object.
  • Palpitations, elevated body temperature and blood pressure.
  • Cold extremities, poor tolerance of hot climate, pale skin.
  • Good appetite, however, body weight is most often low or normal.
  • Often there are constipation on the background of increased urination.

The course of vegetative dystonia is unpredictable. The disease can most of the time be in a latent form and manifest itself in the form of episodic exacerbations - crises or constantly determine the presence of one or another symptom.

Often, exacerbations are associated with stress, change in weather, or other trigger factors. Crises developing on this background can be classified as:

  • Vagoinsular crisis - manifested by a sharp decrease in pressure and body temperature. The patient turns pale, he may develop nausea and even vomiting. Often the attack is accompanied by pain in the abdomen and heart. Observed rapid swelling of the intestine. A person may complain of a headache and difficulty breathing, resembling bronchial asthma.
  • Sympathoadrenal attack - associated with increasing anxiety and fear of death. Often there is tachycardia, increased blood pressure and body temperature. The patient complains of chills, tremor of the limbs and polyuria.

Diagnosis of vascular dystonia

Diagnostic measures in this case are very diverse and their choice for the most part depends on the persisting symptoms of a particular patient:

  • Medical history, including family. Most often, predisposition to vegetative-vascular dystonia is a hereditary disease. You should also pay close attention to whether there are bronchial asthma, neurodermatitis, gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer, diabetes, thyroid dysfunction, hypertension and coronary heart disease in close relatives.
  • The study of the perinatal period in order to exclude the influence of adverse factors on organogenesis, as well as birth injuries.
  • An electrocardiogram is necessarily carried out in all patients, since most complaints are somehow connected with the work of the cardiovascular system.
  • Electroencephalography - allows you to assess the state of the central nervous system, including the presence of vascular pathology and increased intracranial pressure.
  • A blood test for rheumatic tests - is carried out for the differential diagnosis of IRR from rheumatic carditis and other diseases of the autoimmune nature.
  • Daily monitoring of blood pressure and other diagnostic measures related to the diagnosis of primary and secondary arterial hypertension.
  • Fluorography and functional tests aimed at the diagnosis of bronchial asthma, which must be distinguished from specific asthma attacks in the IRR.
  • General analysis of blood and urine, which suggest the presence of foci of latent infection in the body. Conception of a regular rise in temperature to subfebrile numbers may be due to chronic otitis media, pharyngitis, untreated caries, and so on.
  • If a patient has a history of cancer, then you must donate blood for specific tumor markers to rule out the possibility of a relapse.

Treatment of vascular dystonia

Treatment of VSD should be carried out comprehensively taking into account the variety of symptoms of the disease. Due to the prevailing influence of the central nervous system at the initial stage, non-pharmacological therapies are preferred:

  • Normalization of work and rest. If we are talking about a child, it is necessary to ensure that he does not experience unbearable exertion in school and circles. An adult needs to reconsider his attitude towards work if it takes up most of his life or does not satisfy him for a number of reasons.
  • Moderate exercise has a beneficial effect on all processes in the body. It is very important to choose the right kind of sport or a set of exercises in such a way so as not to aggravate the course of the disease and not cause aggravation.
  • It is important to normalize diet and give up bad habits. Excessive consumption of coffee or alcohol is a powerful trigger for the development of vascular crises.
  • Excellent results show methods of manual and reflexology. Most patients show massage, acupuncture, contrasting water treatments, and so on. You must regularly undergo a course of resort and spa treatment on the recommendation of a doctor.

If this therapy has not had the desired effect, then doctors recommend gradually connecting drugs aimed at normalizing the general condition:

  • Sedative drugs. The most safe are drugs from medicinal plant materials that can be safely prescribed to both adults and children. With low effectiveness of this therapy, it is recommended to take drugs of the benzodiazepine series, as well as nootropic and antidepressants. Due to the rapid development of habituation and specific side effects, all of the listed drugs should be used only as prescribed by a physician and for a limited period of time.
  • Reception of vitamins of group B and other biologically active substances is shown, for example, glycine, pantogam, phenibut and so on.
  • Substances that normalize peripheral circulation, including those in the brain.
  • Vegetable adaptogens that help to cope with increasing physical and psychoemotional stress.

Prevention of vegetative dystonia

Measures of prevention of the IRR practically coincide with all the recommendations regarding a healthy lifestyle. It is recommended to control the mode of work and rest, to practice properly and a balanced diet, as well as to exercise moderately.

It is very important to undergo preventive examinations in a timely manner and to treat the existing diseases. Sanitation of foci of chronic infection and adequate medical therapy of pathological conditions can reduce the burden on the body and improve its function.

Vegetative dystonia during pregnancy

If, before pregnancy, a woman suffered from vegetative-vascular dystonia, then during childbirth, the number of seizures is likely to increase. The reason for this will be a hormonal imbalance, as well as reduced immunity and blood pressure. Constant mood swings will also aggravate the course of crises.

Treatment of VSD during pregnancy is carried out mainly by non-drug methods, since most drugs are banned for women carrying babies. It is important to implement all preventive measures, as well as maintain a positive attitude and avoid stress.

Mommies, help! The doctor told us that we have the IRR. A son is 12 years old, like an adult, and you worry as if it were a baby. The first time I ran into this, I decided to ask who this was? How quickly did it go?

Judith A Braithwaite: you wont get out by yanking at your neck, this is coming from the brain in the form of nervous system responses and emotional baggage. A combined approach is needed, commitment, then you'll get your solution. I have this in my whole body, not just neck. I changed my diet to complete plant based, exercised enough but not too much as this drains the system and fatigue is a big contributor to the onset, movement, dig, hop, wander, dance, frolick, play, get off your fucking phone, physical tough, i dont mean sex, i mean hugging, cuddling, love, then the heavier work - hypnosis, clear out your emotional/subconscious system and avoid putting anything back in there that is negative, think positive clean thoughts as if you were good christian boys and girls. Sleep, sleep is massive, you sleep you win. And the biggest, learn to relax, it will take you a whole life time especially with this condition, but THIS should be your only goal in life now. In a stressful job, leave, hate your family, leave, want to climb a mountain go and do it, live your truth and then your body wont be contorting in the agony of knowing that you're wasting your life. 1) CLEAN YOUR DIET UP COMPLETELY! SERIOUSLY> 2) STOP THE DRUGS BOOZE AND SMOKES UNTILL YOU HAVE A HANDLE ON THIS, inc CAFFEINE and especially pharmaceuticals (EVIL POISIN) 3) GET OFF YOUR PHONE AND START LIVING AGAIN 4) EXERCISE - BUT DONT WEAR YOURSELF OUT - THAI CHI - QI GONG 5) HUMAN TOUCH AND CONTACT 6) HYPNOSIS - THIS SHIT WORKS - BUT YOU HAVE TO COMMIT TO IT UNTIL YOU'RE OUT THE OTHER SIDE< NO MATTER WHAT SOME SHOW PONY TELLS YOU, YOU CAN NOT HEAL A TRAUMATIC CHILDHOOD IN ONE SESSION ( OR WHICH EVER TRAUMA CAUSED THIS HORROR SHOW IN YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM) 7) MEDITATION< GO INSIDE AND BE YOUR OWN DOCTOR - YOU OWN IT TOO YOURSELF. AND REMEMBER KIDS - YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL INCREDIBLE CREATURES OF THIS EARTH, FULL OF LOVE AND PERFECTION AND PURPOSE. DON"T LET A TREMOR STOP YOU FROM BEING ALL THAT YOU ARE - BUT KNOW YOU HAVE THE POWER TO SEND THAT PULSATING CUNT BACK TO WHERE IT CAME FROM. No one else will save you. Peace x

Manish Arora: My uncle had very serious problem termed as Cervical dystonia is a painful situation when muscles near neck get contracted. He used Ayurvedic remedies of Planet Ayurveda and got very effective results. So, to get rid of these problems use “Digestion Support, Vara Churna or Amalaki Rasayan" by "Planet Ayurveda". These remedies are really very beneficial.

Rogério de Paula Aguilar: Hello. my name is Rogério and I am from Brazil. Nice to meet you. I was diagnosed with cervical dystonia. I would like to know if a remedy (natural or not except botox since I am already taking it) could stop the head tremor or at least make it less severe. Thank you.

Michelle McManus: I'm having TMJ treatment in the UK and Iv been Botox free now for over 1.5 years :) Iv got my life back and if you search me (Michelle McManus) you will see my YouTube video. Also there is a face book group called Dystonia, TMJ and the connection that have others now having this treatment :) I'm also in talks with the NHS as my neuro followed my journey. Its not standard TMJ treatment! It has to be with a specialist who has experience in working with people with movement disorders and understands the connection - there are many specialist now doing this (finally)! They use a specific splint called a "Modified Gelb" a standard dentist splint will not work. Join the face book site and you can learn more :) Good luck in your jormey X Show less

Mike Jomes: Please try this. I have the same and I going to give it a try! What do we have to lose! Check out these videos - Dr Demerjian on youtube! I agree with Games World, I have tried the botox and it didn't do anything.
