Silicone in the kitchen - bad?

Today, on the shelves of stores more and more began to meet utensils made from materials based on silicone. Silicone dishes are used for a variety of baking, lubricating it with butter using a special brush to freeze various products. Roll out dough on material boards, take a hot frying pan with silicone tacks, etc. Accordingly, housewives using such dishes, or who are going to buy it, have a lot of questions. First of all, we are talking about product safety and the rules for its use after purchase.

Is silicone really safe?

At the moment, most manufacturers of silicone products everywhere talk about the absolute safety and safety of made dishes. Is it really?

One of the independent research laboratories in Switzerland tested silicone baking molds. Forms were poured with water, and for four hours they were subjected to heat treatment at a temperature of 200 degrees. The result of this test showed that approximately 50% of the tested baking molds lost more than 0.5% in their weight and the liquid in them was spoiled. On this basis, it can be said with complete certainty that not all products made from silicone materials are completely harmless. A good half of such products when heated above 150 degrees emit various substances into the environment, which is not too safe for humans. When purchasing any products made of silicone, it is necessary to carefully read the description of the product and find out whether the product meets the quality standards. Only in this case, you can be sure that the purchased dishes will not harm you.

Some nuances to consider

  • Silicone products are flexible. If during baking something such dishes were not put on a baking sheet, then when removing a ready-made cake, for example, from the oven, you can simply break it, because it is still hot and very soft.
  • It is also worth considering that hot baking should be removed from silicone molds with extreme caution, but it is better to wait until the cooked product has cooled.
  • If an open pie with a liquid filling is prepared, it will be very difficult to get it even from a simple form. In order to extract such a cake from a silicone mold, it is recommended to cool it in the refrigerator beforehand.
  • When using different figured forms from silicone, the pattern of the resulting baking will be slightly blurred. This is again due to the elasticity of the silicone.
  • When using high molds and liquid dough, in order to avoid deformation or even leakage of the dough, it is necessary to use special rings for stabilization.
  • It is worth noting the fact that when using forms made of silicone, the crisp crust of the finished products will never work, it will be surely soft.

A few helpful tips on using newly purchased silicone cookware.

  1. For washing such dishes you can use liquid detergents. The use of powders and other cleaning compositions with the addition of abrasive is unacceptable, because they can ruin the coating forms.
  2. If you are not sure about the quality of the purchased silicone products and are afraid that when heated, it may begin to emit harmful substances, then you should put it in a 200-degree oven for a few hours. Thus, if your dishes and will evaporate something, it is not in the products, and the air.
  3. In that case, if you are still afraid of various secretions from silicone with strong heating, you can pick up recipes in which you do not need to heat the oven to temperatures exceeding 150 degrees.
  4. Before heating the oven, it is necessary to remove the grate from it, on which the dough form will be placed. The grid on which you will put the form should not be hot
  5. It is necessary to place the form in the oven in such a way that the distance from it to the heated walls of the oven (as well as the top and bottom) would be more than five centimeters.
  6. Using silicone cookware on an open fire will make it unusable.
  7. You can not cut the cooked dish in the form: you can cut through the silicone itself.

Pros of silicone dishes

  • The heat resistance of dishes made of silicone-based materials allows it to be used not only in the oven, but also in microwave ovens, in convection oven and in the freezer. Such dishes retain their original shape and physical properties at temperatures ranging from -40 to +230 degrees.
  • The non-stick properties of silicone cookware are amazing. Almost never, none of your dish will burn. A cake or pie is baked well and evenly, and it will be a lot of work to get it out of this shape. In the manufacture of baking dishes absolutely no need to pre-lubricate with oil, sprinkle with breadcrumbs or flour. Your masterpiece will not exactly burn.
  • Having frozen the water in a silicone form, there is absolutely no need to knock on it, pick it or even perform other actions to extract the ice. Such dishes allow, without any effort, to get everything out of it, without spoiling anything and breaking it.
  • At the moment, the store presents a huge number of various forms made of silicone. These are products of various heights, widths, complemented by drawings, patterns, etc. You can choose the product that suits your preferences.
  • Special mat for rolling dough - just the perfect solution. Roll out a thin layer of dough does not need to shift, it is right on this rug fits on a baking sheet.

Because of doubts about the quality - I buy only certified silicone. The last 2-3 years, silicone forms have become the most favorite - they keep the design of a cupcake or cake to the smallest details, and brushes and shovels are a fairy tale in general!

I already can not even imagine my kitchen without silicone molds! It's so convenient! The only thing I advise you is to save money and buy dishes made from high-quality silicone. And then I somehow bought a cheap form on the market and not only was the smell not very good, so after a couple of uses, it also became heavily buried and even the brush wasn’t washed off (
