Blood in the urine of women

Blood in the urine of women A condition in which the number of red blood cells in the urine exceeds the physiological norm is called hematuria. Normally, there is no blood in the urine, and during microscopy of the sediment, single unchanged red blood cells can be detected, which get there from the external genital area after careful toilet. However, it often happens that blood is detected in a clinical analysis of urine. Such a condition in 60% of cases signals the development of a urological pathology affecting the kidneys, bladder or urinary tract. However, in 40% of cases, hematuria becomes a consequence of gynecological diseases or blood diseases, accompanied by hypercoagulation.

If a small amount of blood is detected in the urine, which can only be detected using laboratory techniques, we are talking about microhematuria. At the same time, the color of urine remains within the physiological norm.

If the patient's urine changes its color, becomes cloudy and indicates the presence of a significant amount of blood in it, gross hematuria is diagnosed.

Causes of blood in the urine of women

  1. Cystitis
  2. Urethritis.
  3. Endometriosis of the urinary system (urinary tract or bladder).
  4. Idiopathic hematuria in pregnant women.
  5. Wounded or severe bruised kidney.
  6. Urolithiasis (the formation of kidney stones).
  7. Tumors and polyps of the bladder.
  8. Urinary infections.
  9. Traumatic damage to the urethra after catheterization or cystoscopy.
  10. Acceptance of anticoagulants.

However, sometimes panic over the appearance of blood in the urine is false. So, some drugs and food products can give urine a red color.

How to determine what triggered the appearance of blood in the urine?

In the case when the blood is completely dissolved in the urine, the problem should be sought in the kidneys. In order to accurately determine the localization of the pathological process, the patient is assigned a three-glass urine sample.

Renal hemorrhage, or nephroragia, is a pathological condition in which urine becomes red or brown in color and contains clots. It can be caused by some poisons, blood diseases, infectious pathologies, and also kidney injuries.

If the appearance of blood in the urine is accompanied by severe pain, this may signal the presence of a stone or tumor in the urinary system. It should be noted that in this case, the urine becomes bright scarlet staining.

The appearance of blood impurities at the end of urination suggests that it is in the bladder.

The condition in which the blood leaves the urethra outside the process of urination indicates injuries to the walls of the urethra.

Frequent urge to urinate, not bringing complete relief due to the fact that the bladder can not fully release, accompanied by the appearance of blood in the urine, signals its inflammation.

When glomerulonephritis urine becomes dark brown in color or the color of meat slop. This disease is accompanied by the occurrence of edema, oliguria and high blood pressure. In the case when the joint pain joins the above symptoms, lupus erythematosus is diagnosed.

Cystitis is the most common cause of blood in the urine of women. This disease, which is an inflammation of the bladder, can occur in an acute and chronic form. This causes frequent, sometimes false urge to urinate, blood impurities appear in the urine, and patients also complain of persistent or recurring pain in the lower abdomen.

Cystitis can develop due to local hypothermia, in the presence of inflammatory processes in the vagina, due to non-compliance with the rules of personal hygiene, with venereal, gynecological or urological pathologies. Also, signs of cystitis may appear after deprivation of virginity (defloration). However, the pathological process can be the result of frequent colds, weakened immunity, constant stress and errors in nutrition.

This is another very common cause of blood in the urine. This disease develops due to inflammation of the walls of the urethra. In this case, patients complain of sharp pains during urination, scanty mucopurulent discharges appear from the urethra, and blood impurities are detected in all urine samples.

The stricture of the urethra (narrowing of the lumen of the urethra), urolithiasis and trauma to the urethral walls during medical procedures can provoke the development of the pathological process in women.

Endometriosis of the urinary system

Endometriosis of the urinary system is a secondary pathology. Initially, the disease affects the uterus, then the appendages, less often - the external genitalia and vaginal fornix. Most often endometriosis affects the bladder (up to 90% of cases), less often - urinary tract (1-2%).

With the development of the pathological process, a tumor-like formation is formed in the bladder wall, which is morphologically similar to the endometrial tissues that are rejected by the uterus every month during menstruation. In this case, during menstruation, a woman has pain in the bladder and disrupts urination. As a result, hematuria may develop.

If endometriosis is localized in the urinary tract, squeezing of the ureters occurs, the urine outflow is disturbed, the pressure inside the cannula increases, and hematuria of the cyclic type develops.

Hematuria pregnant

Normally, in pregnant women, blood is not detected in the urine. However, sometimes the pathological process can develop, and, at any time, the child is born. Unfortunately, until today, science does not know the exact causes of idiopathic hematuria in pregnant women. In the early stages, according to experts, blood in the urine may appear due to changes in hormonal levels, and later - due to increased intra-abdominal pressure, blood supply to the renal pelvis and mechanical pressure from the growing fetus of the excretory system.

I would like to emphasize that this is a rather dangerous condition that can lead to very serious consequences. First, because of the developing hypoxia of the fetus, placental insufficiency can occur, which often becomes the cause of premature termination of pregnancy, weakening of labor activity and premature birth. Secondly, in the postpartum period, a woman may develop coagulopathic and hypotonic uterine bleeding.

Children born to mothers suffering from hematuria during pregnancy, much worse adapt to extrauterine life than babies born to healthy mothers.

Blood in the urine with infections of the genitourinary system

With the development of an infectious process in the urogenital system, the mouth of the ureters and capillaries, which penetrate the inflamed and edematous walls of the renal pelvis, become the source of bleeding. In this case, patients may develop both micro hematuria and gross hematuria. In the course of laboratory diagnostics, infectious pathogens are detected in the urine that have provoked the development of the inflammatory process. After the inflammation is eliminated, blood flow into the urine is stopped.

Functional hematuria

This is a condition in which blood in the urine appears after severe physical exertion, overheating, or hypothermia. As a rule, it is combined with albuminuria (the appearance of protein in the urine). However, the functional nature of a temporary hematuria that develops during toxicoinfections (influenza, bronchopneumonia, rubella, infectious mononucleosis, epidparotitis, angina , sepsis, etc.).

Blood in the urine: diagnosis

In the case when a woman has blood impurities in her urine, she is obliged to undergo an instrumental and physical examination and she is given a general urine analysis using sediment microscopy. In parallel, studies are appointed to identify possible infections or tumors. If necessary, cystoscopy of the bladder and urethra and intravenous urography are performed. It can also be assigned to tomography of the kidneys and the pelvic area and ultrasound examination of urogenital organs.
