Thrush in women

Content:

Thrush in women Thrush or candidiasis is an infection caused by Candida albicans microscopic fungi. At the moment, this is the most popular infectious disease in the world, the implicit form of which affects millions of people. The presence of Candida fungus in the body is a natural phenomenon, and the disease is only their excessively active reproduction against the background of a general decrease in immunity. With venereal diseases, candidiasis is related to similar symptoms and a general course of the disease, but most often sex has no relation to infection with thrush. At the same time, it is not only women who suffer from thrush, and both partners need to be treated without fail, despite the fact that the male form of the disease often has no symptoms. The vaginal and labia in women and the head of the penis, as well as the foreskin in men, are the areas affected by the vaginal fungus.

Symptoms of thrush in women

The main symptoms of thrush are:

  • discomfort in the genital area;
  • burning and itching;
  • discomfort and pain when urinating;
  • discharge;
  • discomfort and pain during intercourse.

Also, thrush can be accompanied by fever for unexplained reasons and general malaise, typical of almost all infectious diseases.

Thrush in women photo The difficulty of diagnosing thrush in the early stages of the disease is the absence of pronounced symptoms that appear much later than infection. The first signs of a Candida albicans fungus are burning and itching, which provoke scratching and complications already associated with it: swelling and swelling. Such manifestations of the disease are intensified, as a rule, when warming, for example, after a bath or when falling asleep, when a light tingling can become unbearable and not obsessive burning sensation. Especially bright thrush makes itself felt in the premenstrual days, increasing in all its manifestations.
The main symptom for which the thrush got its name is whitish vaginal discharge. A small amount of colorless discharge is considered normal in the intermenstrual periods, but the transformation of this transparent mucus into a curd-like mass is a sure sign of candidiasis. This symptom can also not be seen immediately, as women who have paid attention to discomfort often increase hygiene measures and begin to wash away much more often.

Accurate diagnosis can only specialist on the basis of laboratory tests and indications of light-microscopic examination. Independent diagnosis is not recommended, since many of the symptoms of thrush are similar to signs of other diseases, including sexually transmitted diseases. Therefore, despite the abundance of over-the-counter drugs, their purchase makes sense only after a confirmed diagnosis.
Localization of foci distinguish 3 types of candidiasis:

  • surface;
  • urogenital;
  • skin and mucous.

The causes of thrush

The attitude of thrush to infectious diseases can be the basis for the opinions that it is transmitted from another person. In fact, Candida fungi are sufficient in the body, they are a natural part of the bacterial environment of the intestine, mouth and other mucous membranes. It is important to understand that candidiasis is not the presence of these disputes in the body, but their redundancy.

In a healthy body, the environment itself prevents the overproduction of harmful bacteria, maintaining their normal concentration. Immunity disorders are the main factor provoking an increase in the number of Candida albicans bacteria on the mucous membranes and their concentration in the genital area.

The provoking factors include:

  • changes in the state of the vaginal mucosa on the eve of menstruation;
  • increased humidity, including from sweat or poorly dried laundry, which is the optimal environment for the development of many types of bacteria;
  • change in the acidity level of mucous membranes as a result of the use of intimate hygiene products;
  • allergic reactions to bathroom products and hygiene procedures;
  • allergic reactions to synthetic underwear and tampons;
  • violation of the skin of the vagina during intercourse without sufficient natural moisturizing or lubrication;
  • pregnancy;
  • endocrine disruption (including diabetes);
  • general weakening of the immune system, as well as age-related changes in the body;
  • recovery period after complex diseases or surgery;
  • reactions to hormonal contraceptives, antibiotics, etc. drug treatment.

Most of the factors that trigger Candida’s development are related to weakened immunity and the associated allergic reactions to certain substances. For a long time it was read that thrush is provoked by the use of poor-quality bedding and underwear. Doctors assure that the linen has no direct relation to the occurrence of thrush, but indirectly it can still provoke it. This is most often associated with the violation of normal ventilation, and sweating, as its consequences. In a humid environment, the development of bacteria occurs more actively, thus, women who wear narrow synthetic underwear in hot weather, the risk of the disease is really higher, as in those who admit violations in the normal schedule of hygienic procedures.

Chronic thrush

In the chronic form of vaginal candidiasis, it is also customary to distinguish two types of the disease:

  • recurrent: characterized by periodic outbreaks and latent forms in which the symptoms of the disease do not manifest in any way;
  • persistent: preserving the symptoms constantly, but in a smoothed form.

More than 3% of women with acute thrush suffer from the chronic form of the disease. The sharp increase in cases of such a diagnosis has occurred in the past 5 years due to the fault of television advertising that promises a cure without going to a doctor. Unsuccessful attempts at self-treatment and late medical care are the reasons for changing the type of the disease. The use of antifungal drugs and an unjustified increase in their dosage cause the opposite effect - exacerbation of symptoms and the transfer of the lesion from the external organs to the internal ones. In chronic candidiasis, outbreaks of the disease occur regularly, alternating with periods of attenuation. This complication largely depends on the general state of immunity, and the first task of the attending physician is to identify its source. In this case, the standard form of treatment and drugs purchased without a doctor's prescription will no longer have an effect. Like all fungal organisms, Candida quickly adapts to environmental changes and is no longer curable by the usual program, requiring a more detailed and competent approach. Seeing both genital partners is absolutely necessary.

Treatment of thrush in women

Due to the high adaptability of fungi to external environments, the first stage of treatment of thrush is diagnostics. This procedure is carried out both at the first treatment of the patient, and at each recurrent phase, since the fungus mutations could occur even during this period. Based on the data obtained, a comprehensive course of treatment is selected.
Local lesions of the vagina and labia are treated with douching, suppositories, or topical vaginal tablets. When the disease stage is not started, such measures in the amount of preventive actions are enough. The peculiarity of this group of drugs is a superficial effect directly at the site of application, therefore, with complex forms of the disease and multiple lesions, they are not effective.
Treatment of thrush, as a rule, requires an integrated approach and the use of drugs of several groups: systemic and local antimycotics. Self-treatment for this form of thrush, which is considered the easiest and most completely curable, is unacceptable, since relieving the symptoms, rather than curing them, will only transform the disease into a chronic or latent form. Improper dosage of drugs has more serious consequences - a mutation of the fungus, in which a significant portion of drugs in the future will not affect its development. About the complete solution of the problem can only testify the result of control tests.

Treatment of chronic thrush

Chronic candidiasis is treated in a complex, solving the problem of not only the development of the fungus itself, but also of its disruptions in the body’s immune system. Therefore, a complex of therapeutic measures necessarily include:

  • antimycotic (antifungal) drugs and procedures;
  • fortifying agents;
  • means to restore the bacterial environment and microflora of the body.

Preliminary diagnosis for chronic thrush necessarily includes a search for foci of destruction of the immune system, that is, the identification of all diseases occurring in parallel. They can be both factors aggravating thrush and its consequences. Unlike the acute form of candidiasis, when it takes only a few days to apply a solution of local action to solve a problem, the treatment of the chronic form takes several months. Its integral part is a course of antifungal drugs in combination with vaginal agents. To ensure the success of treatment can only accurate compliance with the instructions, since at this stage Candida is already resistant to the traditional dosage of the drug and its effectiveness is markedly reduced.

Treatment of thrush in pregnant women

The manifestation of thrush in women carrying a fetus is ten times higher than in a normal situation. This is due to hormonal jumps, changes in the chemical composition of the mucous membranes of internal organs and general changes in the immune system. Every 4th woman in labor is diagnosed with candidiasis, and a few weeks before giving birth the number of cases of candidal vaginitis doubles due to changes in the environment of the vaginal mucosa to favorable for the development of the fungus.

The danger of thrush for a pregnant woman and her fetus is difficult to overestimate, its consequences can be:

  • miscarriage or premature delivery;
  • embryo infection;
  • violation of the immunity of the newborn.

Preliminary examination and treatment of thrush before pregnancy planning will reduce the risk of such consequences. Since the use of many drugs for pregnant women is contraindicated, the main focus of treatment is on topical preparations, part of the treatment can be done with folk remedies after consulting a doctor.

Treatment of thrush folk remedies

Folk remedies are recommended for the treatment of thrush only in 2 cases:

  • contraindications to drug treatment, for example, when allergic reactions occur to the majority of drugs;
  • as a secondary tool that helps restore the normal functioning of the body after a doctor's prescriptions or in parallel with them.

Most of the popular recipes are aimed at restoring the alkaline balance of the internal microflora, and therefore consist in washing and douching. The simplest recipes, known for several centuries, are chamomile, celandine, St. John's wort, birch buds and juniper extracts used for rinsing or bathing of the external genital organs.

For rinsing and scrubbing, you can use the following tools:

  • burdock root infusion (Art. Spoon per cup of boiling water);
  • root devyasila (Art. Spoon into a glass of boiling water);
  • St. John's wort (2 teaspoons per glass), infused on a steam bath;
  • potentilla (4 tablespoons per liter of water) infused on the steam bath;
  • Calendula (Art. Spoon into a glass of boiling water).

The same herbs and properties similar to them are also used for rinsing the mouth and for wiping the affected skin, but in this case, the tinctures are made with alcohol and diluted immediately before use.

The effectiveness of such procedures is determined by the properties of medicinal herbs used, their antibacterial action and the ability to reduce itching. Infusions of oak bark and tampons soaked in this solution are considered the most effective folk remedy, since tannins not only slow down the development of bacterial colonies, but also relieve irritation. Also in the recipes of traditional medicine for the treatment of thrush often include soda, as the most affordable household alkaline remedy.

Diet for thrush

Since the main task of traditional medicine in the case of the treatment of thrush is auxiliary, the role of general immunity strengthening is also largely assigned to such recipes. During the period of treatment of thrush, even doctors recommend adding to the diet such strongest of natural restorative remedies as onions and garlic, as well as to increase the number of natural products rich in vitamins in the menu.

An additional factor that stimulates both the treatment of the thrush itself and the elimination of the consequences of its treatment will be the restoration of normal microflora. To do this, in the diet should add natural yogurt with a content of beneficial bacteria. But too sweet samples, like all sweets in general, should be limited, since sugar contributes to the development of fungi and can cause recurrence of thrush.

The optimal set of dishes will be:

  • vegetable stew;
  • lean fish and meat;
  • legumes and non-sweet cereals;
  • spices and spices, moreover, which have proved their incompatibility with fungal diseases;
  • wholemeal bread.

All products whose environment contributes to the development of fungi are contraindicated:

  • sweets;
  • fatty food;
  • smoked meat;
  • alcohol.

Danger of thrush and its consequences

Late treatment of thrush can cause a number of negative consequences.

  • An increase in the lesion and the penetration of the fungus into other organs, as well as from the external form, if the oral cavity is affected by Candida, the fungus can penetrate into the internal organs of the respiratory and digestive systems, which will complicate the treatment and increase the risk of the disease reborn.
  • Impaired fertility in women with the most difficult to eliminate consequences.
  • Hereditary intrauterine infection of a newborn from a mother suffering from the disease.
  • Candida sepsis, as a more complex and dangerous form of the disease.

Moreover, thrush is not considered a serious disease and many start treating it only with serious manifestations that interfere with normal life, the consequences of thrush are rather unpleasant, affecting the rhythm of intimate life and nervous system disorder. Disorders accompanying thrush will not only irritability and insomnia, but also migraines from constant lack of sleep and discomfort. The transition of candidiasis to the chronic form is the prospect of eliminating the symptoms of thrush regularly, while the smallest factors from the abuse of sweets to changing hygienic means can provoke its recurrent occurrence. And in combination with general malaise and weakness during menstruation - thrush is really a disease that can disrupt a full life.

Prevention of thrush in women

Since according to statistics assurances, every fourth woman can be diagnosed with thrush in one form or another, measures to prevent this disease must be followed, even if its symptoms are not noticeable. Moreover, a significant part of preventive procedures refers to the general requirements of good hygiene and general strengthening measures. These recommendations are especially relevant for persons with weakened immunity: the older age group, diabetics, pregnant women and those who have undergone a course of treatment with antibiotics that violate the body's normal microflora.

To preventive measures include:

  • compliance with the rules of a healthy lifestyle and diet, as the basic principles of immunity;
  • refusal of bad habits (smoking and alcohol abuse) - the main causes of the destruction of the protective functions of the body;
  • observance of hygiene measures, especially in public places, to eliminate the risk of infection from a stranger;
  • taking precautions when carrying out intimate hygiene procedures, for example, thorough hand washing before caring for the genitals and regular replacement of sponges and scourers for intimate care (including the categorical rejection of the use of one hygienic tool for several family members);
  • тщательный выбор средств для ванн, дезодорантов и косметических препаратов и их индивидуальное использование;
  • использование нижнего белья из натуральных тканей с нормальным уровнем вентилируемости;
  • поддержание влагалищной кислотности на нормальном уровне и предварительные консультации с доктором перед применением лекарственных средств или БАДов, способных изменить эти показатели;
  • обращение к врачу при появлении первых симптомов молочницы без попытки провести лечение самостоятельно или народными средствами.
