Thrush in adolescent girls

Thrush in adolescent girls

Every adult woman suffers this disease at least once in a lifetime. But it turns out that even teenage girls can be subject to it. You have probably already guessed that we are talking about thrush or, in medical terms, candida. Consider the features of its course and treatment in such a teenage age.

Thrush or candidiasis is a fungal disease caused by microorganisms of the genus Candida albicans. Asymptomatically, it is always present in the body, but only under certain circumstances does its excessively rapid reproduction begin. Therefore, it can be said that the causative agents themselves are not the cause of the disease, but those conditions that aggravate their growth. These include any reduction in immunity, as well as long-term infections, in which the body's defenses weaken.

Such fungi are present not only in the genital tract, but also in the intestine and the oral cavity. Therefore, their presence in the analyzes does not at all indicate that a person is sick with candidiasis. The disease begins when its symptoms manifest.

Ways of infection

This disease does not apply to venereal diseases; therefore, not only teenagers but also children who are completely distant from sexual relations get sick with it. Girls in almost all cases inherit thrush from the mother at the time of delivery. If the woman in labor did not cure candidiasis during pregnancy, the fungus settles in the vagina of the newborn daughter, which is promoted by the acidic environment of the female genital organs.

Although candidosis vulvovaginitis is rarely observed before the first menstruation, there are cases of its development even at the age of seven. Contribute to this:

  • lack of hygiene skills;
  • the presence of pronounced allergic reactions;
  • frequent colds;
  • enterobiosis.

Thrush can also be spread through household items, so it is important to teach a girl from an early age not to use adult things, to have separate soap and a towel.

In transitional age, due to hormonal changes in the body, the incidence of infant thrush increases significantly. Lack of estrogen in the vaginal epithelium leads to a decrease in the level of lactobacilli, which are competitors of vaginal fungi.

In the case of early sexual intercourse, a new surge of thrush occurs, associated with sexual transmission in the absence of knowledge about the hygiene of intimate relationships. Especially frequent are cases of candidiasis with promiscuous sex without protective equipment.

Causes of thrush

Let us consider in more detail the factors contributing to the increase in the growth of the fungus dormant in the body of a teenage girl. Decrease in immunity and body resistance is caused by immunodeficiency, hypovitaminosis, imbalance of the vaginal microflora. Most often this happens with these pathologies:

  • systemic infectious diseases;
  • chronic problems in the ENT organs;
  • circulatory disorders;
  • endocrine pathologies;
  • neutropenia and agranulocytosis;
  • anemia;
  • intestinal dysbiosis ;
  • deficiency of micro and macronutrients.

In the absence of any diseases, a common cause provoking the growth of the fungal flora in children and adolescents is the intake of certain types of medicines. Among them:

  • antibiotics;
  • cytostatics;
  • corticosterides;
  • contraceptives.

This phenomenon is explained by the fact that these drugs help reduce the production of secretory immunoglobulin, which is responsible for the resistance of the child's body. Antibiotics also affect the imbalance of the flora in the body, killing not only harmful bacteria, but also those that do not allow candida to multiply.

Prerequisites for this disease in adolescent girls are also certain household factors:

  • wearing synthetic underwear;
  • violation of hygiene rules;
  • use too aggressive detergents.

Synthetic underwear, poorly absorbing secretions, contributes to the appearance of high humidity in the folds of the external genital organs, which is a very suitable medium for the development of the fungus.

Symptoms of thrush in adolescent girls

Most often, candidiasis in girls occurs in the form of vulvovaginitis, affecting the threshold of the vagina, its mucous and vulva. Manifestations of the disease in adolescents are the same as in adults. These include:

  • severe itching and burning on the vulva;
  • swelling and swelling of the mucous membranes;
  • redness of the external genitalia;
  • white cheesy discharge;
  • the appearance of white plaque on the genitals;
  • with the involvement of neighboring organs in the process - pain during urination.

The first sign of the disease is itching, which in advanced cases may increase when walking. Because of this unpleasant symptom, girls often have sleep disorders. On examination, edema and hyperemia of the external genital organs are found with areas of gray-white plaque, which is easily removed. After that, under the curd layer, reddened areas open, which in some patients bleed.

The initial manifestations of the disease in the form of local lesions of the mucous membranes in the future may expand in connection with the spread of infection through the bloodstream.

Chronic stages of the disease are less intense hyperemia, less prevalent lesion foci. If menstruation is already present in a non-treated girl, then the intensification of such symptoms occurs before each of them.

Chronic forms are characterized by a change in the appearance of the external genital organs - the skin on them and the mucous membranes become brown in color, the large and small lips become wrinkled. In addition to lesions of the genitalia, candidiasis of the intestines, candidal stomatitis and tonsillitis are often found in such patients.

For the diagnosis of girls use a range of studies:

  • visual inspection;
  • laboratory diagnostics;
  • ultrasound diagnostics.

The characteristic lesion of the skin and mucous membranes found during external examination should be confirmed in the results of laboratory tests:

  • microscopy;
  • sowing material on nutrient media;
  • immunological studies;
  • blood test for PCR.

Thanks to them, the pathogen and its colonies are detected in specially prepared preparations; differential diagnosis is made with infections of another species. Ultrasound allows you to specify the extent of the process and complications.

Treatment of thrush in adolescent girls

Simple at first glance, the disease should be treated only in accordance with the recommendations of the doctor. By self-healing, the problem can be pushed deep inside, which could later have the most detrimental consequences. With proper treatment, all symptoms of the disease disappear in a matter of days, but in the future it is important not to miss relapses and complications. To do this, you should exclude all factors due to which there was a thrush. There are several approaches to the treatment of adolescents.

Local treatment

In most cases, girls are treated with topical antifungal agents and antiseptics. For this purpose, suppositories are prescribed containing levorin, natamycin, clotrimazole.

Ointments containing these drugs, can also be applied in the form of applications, putting them on a napkin and applying to the affected areas.

The therapeutic baths and the washing of mucous membranes with baking soda or chamomile solutions have a good healing effect.

The advantages of local treatment are the absence of side effects, the rapid elimination of symptoms, if necessary, the possibility of increasing the concentration of the drug.

Systemic treatment

In the most severe cases with a relapsing course of the disease, as well as in the presence of several lesions, the following types of antifungal drugs can be administered orally:

  • Nizoral, depending on body weight, 1/2 tablets 1-2 times a day;
  • Diflucan - per day, 3-8 mg per 1 kg of weight;
  • Amfogyukamin - 200 000 IU twice a day by mouth for 3-4 weeks.

These funds require careful use, as they can cause toxic or allergic reactions, as well as side effects.

Immunocorrective therapy

Since the growth spurt of fungal flora is associated with a decrease in immunity, to combat it, it is necessary to increase immunity. Therefore, together with the main treatment for this purpose, immunocorrective therapy is prescribed for a period of at least 4 weeks. The following remedies are usually recommended:

  • Rhodiola rosea and eleutherococcus preparations, which are ingested 30 drops 2-3 times a day;
  • ointments containing solcoseryl and vitamin A.

Correction of microbial flora

Probiotics that are prescribed in such cases to adults, adolescents are not always shown, since they can cause an imbalance of flora in the vagina. But in some cases, after removing a pronounced inflammatory process, a doctor may recommend taking such drugs:

  • lactobacterin;
  • bifikol;
  • acelact;
  • sour-milk mixtures.

Traditional methods of treatment

When treating thrush in adolescents, folk remedies are recommended as ancillary, they are used after consulting a doctor. Good effect is observed from the use of the following compounds:

  • tincture of calendula, which is prepared at the rate of 25 flowers per 0.1 l. alcohol, a teaspoon of the obtained product is diluted in a glass of boiled water, the resulting solution can be washed and baths;
  • extract of Hypericum, for its preparation I pour 2 liters of 2 tablespoons of dried herb of Hypericum. boiling water and kept in a water bath for half an hour, the resulting infusion is used in the same way for baths, lotions and external scrubbing;
  • 3 tbsp. spoons of linden blossoms and the same amount of bark oaks pour 1 l. boiling water and infused for 30 minutes, used in the same way.

In addition to these recipes, you can use a mixture of chamomile flowers, herbs of juniper, sage, eucalyptus, calendula, yarrow, birch buds. A couple of tablespoons of such platter should be brewed in a thermos with a glass of boiling water overnight. Apply in the same way.

With proper and timely treatment, this disease gives in to it well and does not give complications. In advanced cases, as well as in severe immunodeficiency, the following are possible:

  • generalization of infection, the emergence of new foci at a distance from the sites of the primary lesion;
  • the occurrence of adhesions, which threatens the development of infertility;
  • development of thromboembolic complications;
  • violation of intestinal activity.

The first complications of inadequately treated thrush are expressed in disorders of the nearest menstrual cycle.

Prevention of thrush

The best remedy for thrush in adolescents aged 12 to 16 years is its prevention. The implementation of simple measures will help to protect yourself from this unpleasant disease. They are as follows:

  • observe proper intimate hygiene;
  • wear underwear made from natural materials;
  • Do not use antibiotics without medical supervision;
  • balance nutrition in favor of greater intake of vitamins;
  • not to smoke and not to drink alcohol, weakening the immunity of a teenager;
  • avoid early onset of sexual activity.

When washing away teens should use special gels for intimate hygiene, which do not contain dyes and fragrances. Performing hygiene procedures in the intimate area with frequent use of regular toilet soap only contributes to the growth of fungal flora. Instead of hygienic tampons during menstruation, it is better to use pads. You need to make sure that after washing the underwear is well rinsed. Remains of synthetic detergent on it when worn can cause irritation and thrush.

Consumption of sweets and products prepared with yeast should be limited in the diet.

As we see, each mother can save her daughter from the disease of thrush, dedicating her to these simple rules.
