Lung cancer treatment
Modern medicine provides several ways to treat lung cancer, to achieve the best result, a combination of several of them is often used. Immediately it should be said that it is not possible to get rid of so many dangerous diseases on our own without resorting to medical assistance. And the use of popular recipes in this case is simply unacceptable.
The main treatments for lung cancer include:
- surgical removal of the tumor;
- radiation therapy;
Lung Cancer Surgery
Surgical removal of the tumor is carried out in most cases of its detection. The outcome of such an operation is favorable if the disease is in the first two stages of its development. If the tumor has already spread to distant systems of the body or has sprouted into neighboring organs, its removal does not bring the desired result.
Lung surgery can be performed in the following ways:
- marginal resection of the organ - removal of the tumor itself, is ineffective for large neoplasms;
- removal of a certain lobe of the lung;
- pneumonectomy - removal of the entire affected organ, is used in the last two stages of tumor development, and is associated with a risk to the patient's life;
- surgery to remove the tumor itself and parts of the affected organs. Most often, lung cancer gets spread to the heart vessels, liver, and ribs. The procedure is extremely unfavorable for human health, however, it allows to increase the duration of his life.
Contraindications to lung surgery are:
- heart failure;
- the presence of diabetes;
- diseases of the liver, kidneys;
- recent surgery on the heart area.
Radiation therapy for lung cancer is performed if surgical removal of the tumor is impossible for medical reasons, as well as after its implementation as an adjunctive therapy.
Irradiation of a separate part of the body allows, as a rule, to suspend the development of the disease, but does not ensure the complete destruction of malignant cells. The use of radiation therapy is harmful to the human body, it can be associated with the occurrence of such side effects as bleeding disorders, chronic fatigue, reduced immunity. In the event that the internal organs were also exposed to radiation, problems with digestion and bowel emptying may occur.
A type of radiation therapy is brachytherapy - the irradiation of a diseased organ by introducing a radioactive substance into it. A small dose of radiation also helps to stop the process of tumor development.
Chemotherapy for lung cancer
Chemotherapy, the main method of treating all types of malignant tumors, involves the introduction into the patient's body of certain doses (sometimes very large) of special toxic drugs that destroy the neoplasm cells and stop the development of the disease.
Chemotherapy may be in the form of tablets or injections (intravenous). The use of certain means depends on the degree of organ damage. The treatment is carried out most often in the clinic, but in some cases the patient may be at home and visit the medical facility only for the procedure.
Small cell cancer requires compulsory chemotherapy. Even at the initial stage of development of the disease, the survival of patients without taking special drugs is no more than four months. Their treatment is carried out in cycles or courses, with a mandatory break.
Most often, platinum is prescribed to treat lung cancer. In order to avoid intoxication of the body, they should be taken along with a large amount of fluid. Immediately it should be noted that such treatment is very expensive.
The introduction of chemotherapy into the body of the patient prevents the division of not only malignant cells, but also its own cells. As a result, there are a lot of side effects, including hair loss, spontaneous bleeding, weight loss, pallor, frequent nausea, problems with digestion, upset stools, fainting. All unpleasant symptoms disappear after discontinuation of treatment.
Cancer therapy can be directed not only to eliminate the disease, but also to alleviate the patient's condition. Even complete removal of the tumor and the absence of metastases can not guarantee that the disease will not return in a few years. The probability of its recurrence is extremely high.
