Pain under the left shoulder blade from the back: causes

With such a symptom as pain under the left shoulder blade from behind, you have to face quite often. This signal of your body can indicate the presence of serious problems in it and, therefore, in no case should not be drowned out with painkillers. Among the many pathological conditions associated with this symptom are serious cardiac, gastrointestinal and neurological diseases. Let us consider in more detail the possible causes of this phenomenon.

Peptic ulcer

Pain under the left shoulder blade from the back. It is believed that the main cause of pain under the scapula on the left side of the back is a heart attack. This is not at all the case and, in fact, most often this symptom occurs due to gastric ulcer.

Features of the manifestation of pain in this case are as follows:

  • growing character;
  • seasonality of pain;
  • weakening after vomiting;
  • connection with meals.

On the peptic ulcer also indicate the presence of heartburn or belching. About 75% of patients experience relief from vomiting, which occurs on top of pain without prior nausea. Sometimes ulcer patients for this reason try to cause it artificially. Such pain can be felt not only in the area of the left shoulder blade, but also present in the area of the epigastrium, radiating to the left nipple and behind the sternum. Almost always there is some connection with meals: the pain can be hungry, early, late, nocturnal. If such a connection is found, the peptic ulcer can be considered confirmed.

Severe pain, extending into the clavicle and under the scapula, occurs during ulcer perforation. In this case, the following are observed:

  • cold sweat;
  • characteristic posture with knees pulled up to the belly;
  • lower blood pressure;
  • decrease in heart rate.

Much less often in the left side of the back there are pains caused by acute pancreatitis . It is more typical for surrounding and cramping pain. Most often, they are of a sudden nature and occur in the epigastrium with a reflection in the left side of the body - in the chest, the heart area, under the left shoulder blade.

Vegetative crises

In this case, the patient describes his pain sensations in a rather colorful way. In addition to them, he is worried about such accompanying symptoms:

  • feeling of tightness and heaviness in the chest;
  • heat in the chest;
  • the absence of a specific place for localization of pain;
  • pain in the heart;
  • feeling of trembling and fear;
  • lack of air;
  • anxiety.

This is not to say that it only hurts in the left shoulder blade area. The pain then goes to the left hand, then goes to the area of the clavicle, then falls to the lower abdomen. Patients experience a feeling of lack of air, a feeling of heart failure and constriction of the throat. The thorax at this time seems to them squeezed or gripped by a feeling of heat.

Myocardial infarction

Only in third place among the causes of pain under the left shoulder blade is myocardial infarction. This life-threatening condition manifests itself with paroxysmal chest pains extending into the left jaw, left arm, and left shoulder blade. Pain with a predominance of burning at the same time initially manifested in the retrosternal region and spread to the left side. Localization and irradiation of pain are the same as in angina pectoris. Distinctive features of pain during a heart attack are:

  • extreme pain intensity;
  • no positive reaction to nitroglycerin;
  • duration over 15 minutes.

Pain during a heart attack is very intense and makes some patients scream. Some patients complain of severe numbness of the wrists in combination with prolonged chest pain. It occurs more often at night or before dawn and lasts, as a rule, for more than half an hour, and sometimes several hours.

Angina pectoris

Another cardiac disease may manifest itself with sharp pains under the left shoulder blade - this is angina pectoris . When it pains primarily arise in the chest region, then it is as if “poured” into the left side. By the nature of the manifestation, they are sharp and constricting, disappear at rest and after taking nitroglycerin. To a lesser extent, the patient helps validol.

In most cases, the disease is caused by atherosclerosis of the coronary arteries. Angina attacks most often occur during physical and emotional stress, after a sharp overcooling or overheating of the body, alcohol, and spicy and heavy food.

Diseases of the broncho-pulmonary system

Constant pain under the left shoulder blade may indicate developing left-sided pneumonia, as well as dry pleurisy. Confirmation of the presence of these diseases is increased pain when coughing, sneezing and just a deep breath. If the pain is really caused by pneumonia, then it can subside somewhat in a horizontal position and when the body turns to a healthy side. As a rule, the following symptoms are characteristic of this disease:

  • dry or, much less often, wet cough;
  • presence of pus or blood in the sputum;
  • low-grade body temperature;
  • shortness of breath, feeling short of breath.

Pain sensations are always directed towards the affected lung, they have medium intensity and aching character, localized under the left shoulder blade in one pain point.

Pain symptoms in pulmonary diseases almost always indicate the presence of pleurisy. At the same time, pain can sometimes manifest itself as a slight tingling under the shoulder blade, aggravated by taking a deep breath to cutting and piercing sensations. In most cases, when pleurisy is observed a sharp painful symptom of stabbing nature, the intensity of which is proportional to the depth of breathing.

Diseases of the musculoskeletal system

Some diseases of the musculoskeletal system may also be accompanied by a painful symptom in the area of the left shoulder blade. Certain osteochondrosis most often manifests itself. He is disturbed by one-sided aching pains at the bottom of the occipital bone, which are aggravated by head movements and are constantly given to the arm and under the scapula. In addition to pain in this pathology, the following symptoms occur:

  • numbness of the upper limbs;
  • hand paresthesias;
  • dizziness;
  • headaches.

At the onset of the disease, the painful sensations are unclear and are radiating towards the infringement of the roots. Drawing and spontaneously calming pains often disappear after warming or bathing in a warm bath. Over time, they become more and more familiar, arising from sleep or long sedentary work that requires static stress. They spread down from the neck - along the arm, along the back, including the scapula.

Another disease, a typical symptom of which is pain under the left shoulder blade, is intercostal neuralgia. It is a frequent consequence of osteochondrosis and is manifested by lumbago and intense shingles, giving to the right or left, including under the scapula. Pain caused by intercostal neuralgia spreads along the intercostal muscles and increases with coughing, deep breathing, and stooping. The most severe and severe episodic pain in the left shoulder blade is caused by this particular disease. They, however, subside when the pain zone is warmed and relaxed.

In favor of intercostal neuralgia says the presence of pain during her palpation. The deep-seated nature of the disease and the protracted deforming process in the spinal column are indicated by the presence of a characteristic burning sensation under the scapula. It is important in this case not to confuse these feelings with manifestations of angina.

If intercostal neuralgia is combined with pleurisy, the pain becomes shingles.

The pain under the left shoulder blade can also be caused by the scapular-costal syndrome, which means a disease of the muscle that raises the shoulder blade. It is attached to the transverse processes of the upper cervical vertebrae. If this muscle is injured, overcooled or simply overloaded, it is not able to properly perform its function, consisting in neck bends and shoulder blade lifts.

Scapular-rib syndrome manifests itself as nagging, fairly intense pain in the upper arms, the areas above and below the scapula. A characteristic feature of this pathology is the presence of crunch when moving with shoulders and arms. Prolonged static stress and constant dynamic loads create a situation where the pain becomes constant, aggravated by cold or drafts.
