Betaxolol user's manual
Betaxolol eye drops are a drug used in the treatment of glaucoma.
Form of issue and composition
The drug is produced in the form of eye drops, with a drug concentration of 0.5%. The main active ingredient is betaxolol, which belongs to the cardioselective group - beta-1-adrenoblockers.
The drug has antiglaucoma, antianginal, hypotensive and antiarrhythmic effect. The antianginal effect is manifested in a decrease in myocardial oxygen demand. The effect of the drug is manifested after 2-3 hours after administration, the maximum is achieved after 3-4 hours, the duration of the effect is 12-24 hours. It is excreted from the body with urine.
Indications for use
Betaxolol (eye drops) is used in ophthalmology for topical use in the following diseases:
- chronic open-angle glaucoma;
- condition after laser trabeculoplasty;
- increased intraocular pressure.
For adults, it is recommended to instill 1 drop into the affected eye of a 0.5% solution 2 times a day.
To normalize the intraocular pressure, Betaxolol will be used for several weeks, so the effectiveness of the drug is evaluated after 4 weeks.
The efficacy of Betaxolol is reduced by joint admission with adrenomimetics.
Joint reception with antidiarrhoeal agents and antacids leads to a decrease in the absorption of the active substance of the drug.
Simultaneous reception with other antihypertensive drugs increases the antihypertensive effect of Betaxolol.
The use of halogen-containing agents in inhalational anesthesia enhances the negative inotropic effect.
Estrogens, glucocorticoids, NSAIDs, the hypotensive effect of the drug is weakened.
Cardiac glycosides can enhance bradycardia.
The use of antidepressants reduces blood pressure and leads to the risk of developing hypotension.
Diltiazem, amiodarone, verapamil and quinidine drugs increase the possibility of conduction disorders, contractility and automatism of the heart.
The combined use of lidocaine increases its concentration in the blood.
Simultaneous use with sulfasalazine increases the amount of betaxolol in the blood.
Sinus bradycardia, cardiogenic shock, sinoatrial block, chronic heart failure of severe form, significant violations of peripheral circulation, AV blockade of 2 and 3 degrees, weakness syndrome of the sinus node, individual intolerance of the drug components.
From the side of the digestive system, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain are rarely possible.
From the cardiovascular system at an early stage of treatment, AV blockade, arterial hypotension, sinus bradycardia, Raynaud's syndrome , heart failure are possible.
From the respiratory system: bronchospasm.
On the part of the nervous system: sleep disturbance, drowsiness, depression, dizziness, re-extremities, asthenia.
Local reactions: immediately after instillation, long-term discomfort in the eyes, lacrimation may occur; decreased sensitivity of the cornea, itching, erythema, keratitis, photophobia, anisocoria, staining of the cornea.
Allergic reactions: cutaneous manifestations similar to psoriasis .
Pregnancy and lactemia
During pregnancy and breastfeeding, taking Betaxolol is permitted only in situations where the possible benefit to the patient is significantly higher than the perceived risk to the child or fetus.
It is not desirable to use for chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma. With caution should be taken with diabetes, thyrotoxicosis, bronchial hyperactivity.
In the presence of renal failure, dosage correction can not be performed, but at an early stage of treatment, constant clinical observation is necessary.
At the beginning of the treatment, predisposing patients may develop symptoms of heart failure.
It is necessary to abolish the drug gradually, especially in the presence of angina and ischemic heart disease.
In closed-angle glaucoma Betaxolol should be used together with myotics, since the drug has no effect on the size of the pupil. After completing treatment with other antiglaucoma drugs, their cancellation is carried out gradually (1 week per drug) and only after this is transferred to Betaxolol.
Conducting a scheduled operation requires the drug to be discontinued.
During application of Betaxolol in the form of eye drops, contact lenses should not be worn.
In children's practice, Betaxolol is not recommended.
Care should be taken when applying to individuals whose activities require rapid reactions and high attention.
When applying the drug at a dose above the therapeutic norm, the following symptoms may appear: hypotension, arrhythmia, bradycardia, acute heart failure, hypoglycemia, bronchospasm, convulsions , collapse.
Treatment is carried out with the help of gastric lavage and the appointment of adsorbent substances.
