The drug Acyclovir is a powerful antiviral agent intended for external use, which is highly effective against herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2.
Form of formulation and composition of the preparation
This drug is available in the form of an ointment 5% for external use in aluminum tubes of 20 g. The tubes are packed in a cardboard box.
The main active substance of the ointment is acyclovir. Excipients - emulsifier № 1, nipose, nipagin, purified water, lipocomp "C". Ointment is a homogeneous substance of white or white with a yellowish hue, without any sharp or specific odor.
Indications for use of the drug
Acyclovir ointment is prescribed to patients for treatment and prevention of such conditions:
- Herpetic skin rashes;
- The defeat of the herpes simplex virus genitalia and mucous membranes of the genital tract;
- Shingles caused by herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2.
Acyclovir ointment can not be used by patients for treatment if they have the following symptoms or limitations:
- Individual intolerance of acyclovir or excipients included in the preparation;
- Presence on the skin of purulent or ulcerative lesions;
- Open wounds and bacterial skin infection in the lesions;
- Children under 3 years;
- Pregnancy and lactation.
Dosing and Administration
This drug is intended for external use for the treatment of herpetic lesions of the skin and external genitalia. The number of daily applications of the ointment and the duration of treatment is determined by the doctor, depending on the diagnosis, the severity of the virus infection, the individual characteristics of the patient's body.
For example, to treat herpetic infection around the mouth and under the nose, ointment should be applied to the affected areas 3 times a day, after cleaning the skin of dust and cosmetics (women). The course of treatment is at least 5 days.
Treatment of herpes zoster as part of complex therapy with Acyclovir ointment is about 7 days, and the drug should continue to be applied to the affected skin areas for 3 more days after the disappearance of the clinical symptoms of the disease in order to prevent recurrence of the infection. The total duration of ointment treatment should not exceed 10 days. If during this period the patient does not observe any improvement, then the doctor should be consulted again in order to clarify the diagnosis and assess the adequacy of the treatment.
Use of the drug during pregnancy and lactation
Doctors do not recommend using ointment against herpes Acyclovir in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Despite the fact that there is no data on the teratogenic effects of acyclovir on the embryo, it is still not recommended to use this medication during this period, as the internal organs of the fetus are formed during the first 3 months, and the use of any medicines, even local effects, may break this delicate process.
The use of ointments in the 2nd and 3rd trimester should be agreed with the gynecologist. The use of acyclovir at these times is possible when the expected benefit to the mother is many times greater than the potential risk to the fetus.
Use of ointment Acyclovir during breastfeeding is not recommended, since the active substance of the drug penetrates into breast milk and can accumulate in the body of the baby, causing severe impairment of kidney and liver function. If it is necessary to use this drug during lactation, it is necessary to transfer the child to artificial feeding with the milk adapted mixture.
Side effects and symptoms of drug overdose
Ointment for external use Acyclovir 5% in most cases is well tolerated by patients, however, depending on the individual characteristics of the body and the correct use during treatment, it is possible to develop the following side effects:
- Hyperemia and itching of the skin after application of the drug;
- Burning and rash skin of an allergic nature;
- Swelling of the skin after application of the drug;
- Dryness and peeling of the skin with prolonged use or excessive application of the drug.
Since the drug is poorly absorbed into the systemic bloodstream, cases of an overdose of ointment acyclovir in medicine are not described, however, in order to prevent the development of the above-mentioned side effects, it is not recommended to exceed the dose of the drug prescribed by the doctor.
Interaction of the drug with other drugs
Simultaneous use of Acyclovir ointment with other antiviral drugs orally enhances the therapeutic effect of the ointment.
Simultaneous external use of an ointment with acyclovir tablets increases the risk of side effects with an incorrectly calculated dosage of the drug.
Ointment is intended for external use, therefore 5% acyclovir can not be applied to the mucous membrane of the eyes in keratosis, the walls of the vagina, the oral cavity and the nasal mucosa.
Acyclovir ointment does not have a protective property against genital tract infections, therefore during the period of treatment with the drug in genital herpes it is necessary to refuse from sexual contacts or use barrier means of contraception.
The drug is practically not absorbed into the bloodstream, so during the treatment with ointment the patient can continue to drive the car and control other complex mechanisms that require reaction speed. The active substance of the ointment does not inhibit the CNS and does not inhibit the reaction rate.
